The NFI Academy is housed in the NFI Field Lab, located next to the NFI main building. It contains a large hall (800 m2/4000m3), where a Crime Scene (CS) can be recreated to scale.
The space has been provided with the most recent techniques for multidisciplinary exercises and training. This enables forensic investigations staff of the police and forensic examiners to practise finding and securing traces. It is a unique facility, the only one of its kind worldwide.
The NFI Field Lab makes use of state-of-the-art technology. For example, it is possible to replicate nuclear, biological and terrorist attacks, with the aim of ensuring optimum preparation for an incident involving chemical, biological, radioactive and nuclear (CBRN) materials.
CSI The Hague is also making use of the NFI Field Lab. This consortium consists of the best forensic and technological companies in the Netherlands, combining techniques to create a digital and virtual CS. For example, efforts are underway to create a virtual environment in which persons can, as it were, feel, smell, see, hear, taste and observe what traces have been left behind.
