Research and Development
The NFI is seen as one of the leading forensic institutes in the world, and serves as an example for institutes inside and outside of Europe. The NFI acquired this position through the continuous improvement of its products and services. Research and development (R&D) at the NFI is, therefore, strongly steered on the basis of experiences from the forensic practice.

Innovation
The NFI invests heavily in R&D in order to be able to provide high-quality forensic services now and in the future. This will ensure that the work will remain state-of-the-art, and that we will be able to continuously improve and make further innovations in the services provided. For example, the NFI responds to changes in the fields of:
- the forensic questions that are asked
- the type and number of traces that are examined
- the technology available to examine traces
After all, current innovations form the basis for future forensic research.
Cooperation
Many forensic techniques, including DNA, have their origin in an entirely different domain. For this reason we have close relations with the business community, knowledge institutes and universities, in order to identify new forensic possibilities at an early stage of development.
