The NFI is seen as one of the leading forensic institutes in the world, and serves as an example for institutes inside and outside of Europe. The NFI acquired this position through the continuous improvement of its products and services. Research and development (R&D) at the NFI is, therefore, strongly steered on the basis of experiences from the forensic practice.

Many forensic techniques, including DNA, have their origin in an entirely different domain. For this reason we have close relations with the business community, knowledge institutes and universities, in order to identify new forensic possibilities at an early stage of development.
