After a major terrorist attack or industrial incident, first areas of concern are public order, victims, and public health. But, exactly in those first hours, it is important to secure forensic evidence.
Within the framework of the CBRN Forensics programme, the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) is developing methods and innovations to improve forensic investigation at the scene or in the laboratory. The investigations concerned in this context relate to incidents with Chemical, Biological, Radioactive, and Nuclear material.
The NFI also has a trained and certified gas suit team that is able to investigate a crime scene, and the institute cooperates closely with national and international partners, including the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO), the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
