STL signs Memorandum of Understanding with the NFI

The Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI). The purpose of the agreement is to establish a framework for the provision of forensic science services by the NFI to the STL.

“This is another example of the considerable support that the Government of the Netherlands provides to international judicial bodies”, said the Registrar of the STL, Herman von Hebel. “This memorandum of understanding formalises the existing relationship between the NFI and the tribunal, and it will be invaluable to all the organs within the STL.”

The NFI carries out a number of forensic techniques including analysis of explosives, weapons and DNA, as well as trace analysis and digital expertise such as 3D crime scenes.

"The NFI provides objective state-of-the-art forensic services in over thirty disciplines”, said Kees Möhring, the Director of External Relations at the NFI. “Our services will be available to both the Prosecution and the Defence. We are proud and pleased that The Netherlands are able to continue to strengthen the international justice system."
