Cooperation between the NFI, the NWO and the National Institute of Justice

Recently the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI), science financier the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) in Washington signed an agreement for the exchange of research data and the joint setting up of research and development programmes which are intended to generate the forensic technology of the future.

The NIJ, which is part of the American Department of Justice, is also interested in the methods which the NFI has used in recent years to make the organisation more efficient and considerably shorten delivery times.

Exchange

In the first instance the agreement covers, primarily, the exchange of scientific knowledge and technology. In addition, an assessment is to be made as to whether there are possibilities for cooperating in the field of research & development (R&D). To that end, the NFI and the NIJ, together with the NWO, are going to develop activities which are focused on bringing together scientists and professionals in the forensic sector, including:

  • the promotion of high quality forensic-scientific research
  • the promotion of mutual communication between scientists and professionals in the forensic sector in the United States and the Netherlands
  • the investigation of possible joint activities and cooperation, such as a (research) grants system, joint research projects, staff and student exchanges, lectures, workshops and network meetings

This agreement is part of the NFI’s aim to enter into strategic long-term partnerships on behalf of research, development and innovation.
