NFI and Dutch DNA Database Annual Reports Published

The annual reports of the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) and the Dutch DNA Database were published recently.

In its 2011 annual report the NFI presents a brief overview of the most important developments during that year, subdivided into three themes: innovation, quality and cooperation. The key figures provide an insight into the delivery times and personnel structure.

2011 was an exceptional year for the NFI. Delivery times fell even further during the year, to an average of slightly over two weeks. International partnerships were expanded, the CSI Lab – a product of the CSI The Hague programme – was opened, and the NFI was regularly in the news in connection with high-profile innovations such as RNA cell typing and the bomb data system.

DNA database

The theme of the 2011 annual report of the DNA database was forensic DNA familial testing. A noticeable finding is that around 50% more traces were linked to people in 2011 than in 2010. The total number of trace-person matches shows that 47% of the traces included in the DNA database generated a match with a person. This means that the DNA database is a very effective means of tracing suspects.
