Comparison DNA database with Hungarian profiles

On Friday 12 October 2012, a comparison was made for the first time between the profiles from the Dutch DNA database for criminal investigation purposes and the Hungarian DNA database.

After Austria, Germany, Slovenia, Luxembourg, Finland, Spain, France, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Romania, Latvia, and Lithuania, Hungary is the thirteenth country with which Dutch DNA profiles are compared. At the start, the two countries sent each other traces that had not yet been linked to a person.

Matches

The Netherlands sent 34,298 DNA profiles of traces and compared them with approximately 300 DNA profiles of traces and more than 22,000 DNA profiles of persons. The comparison rendered two possible matches between the Dutch traces and persons in the Hungarian DNA database. These matches must first be examined further in order to establish whether they are actual matches or false positives.

Prüm Convention

The comparison of DNA profiles between the Dutch database and foreign databases is made within the framework of the EU Council Decisions based on the Prüm Convention. Since 12 October, the DNA profiles of the Dutch and Hungarian databases have been compared with each other on a daily basis, just as is the case with the above-mentioned countries.

The DNA database is located at the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI).
