Knowledge Exchange of Airplane Accidents at NFI

Recently all organisations engaged in the field of airplane accident investigation exchanged knowledge and experience during a meeting at the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI).

The theme of the day was ‘managing the scene of the accident’ during the investigation of a crashed airplane. One of the activities was an exercise around a crashed airplane at the NFI Field Lab.

Knowledge Exchange

International agreements have been made on the investigation after an airplane accident. It is important to exchange knowledge about these investigations (and the approach to be adopted), recent developments, and experience. For this reason, the NFI organised the first meeting around the investigation of crashed airplanes in 2007, together with the Royal Netherlands Air Force and the Netherlands Police Agency. By now, all organisations engaged in the field of airplane accident investigation participate in this day.

Protocol

The NFI, which conducts investigations in civil aviation accidents and in military aviation accidents, has developed a special protocol for these types of accidents.

A pathologist comes to the scene of the accident and is present when the human remains are being recovered. Apart from autopsies on the human remains of the cockpit crew, X-rays are made and toxicological examinations are conducted. In addition to the classical forensic techniques, the NFI also uses new investigative means to conduct the investigation in accordance with the latest international standards.
