International Exercise @tomic 2012 Concluded

The international table top exercise @tomic 2012 was concluded successfully in the NFI Field Lab of the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) on 29 November. In this Field Lab, experts practised methods to combat nuclear and radiological terrorism on the basis of an international scenario. One of the components of the scenario addressed the role of cybercrime in such situations.

The exercise was organized by the National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Safety (NCTV), together with (among others) INTERPOL, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), the European Commission, and the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This year, the NFI hosted the @tomic 2012 exercise at the NFI Field Lab, and it was a participant as well; in 2014 it will be the coordinator of Nuclear Forensics for the Nuclear Security Summit 2014.

During @tomic 2012 the emphasis was on practising the cybercrime scenario, whereby the sharing of intelligence and the international cooperation were the major success factors. In total, 150 participants from 30 countries were involved in the exercise, including participants from the United States, Canada, the Philippines, India, China, Yemen, Egypt, Moldavia, Sweden, Germany, and the Netherlands.
