Official Opening of DNA Laboratory in Surinam

In December 2012 the first forensic DNA laboratory in Surinam was officially opened. The ceremony was attended by officials of the Surinam Ministry of Justice and Police, the ambassador of the United States and representatives of the Dutch Embassy.

Surinam's Minister of Justice and Police Edward Belfort congratulated professor Malti Adhin, head of the forensic DNA laboratory, with this milestone for Surinam. He also thanked the United States and The Netherlands for their role in realising this laboratory and emphasized the importance of the Netherlands Forensic Institute's involvement in the further development of the Surinam Forensic Institute.

In 2010, the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) and the Surinam Ministry of Justice and Police signed an agreement that arranged consultancy by the NFI on establishing a Coordinating Unit for Forensic Investigation and the introduction of forensic DNA analysis in Surinam.
