Dutch Nuclear Pavilion in Vienna

From 16 up to and including 20 September, the Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was held in Vienna.

The conference theme was uniting parties charged with the prevention of nuclear terrorism. The organization expected about a thousand visitors from 150 countries. The NFI paid attention to the importance of forensic investigation after nuclear incidents.

Forensics in Nuclear Security

Within the framework of the Forensics in Nuclear Security Programme, initiated by the NFI, participants shared knowledge at an international level about the manner in which forensic investigation could contribute to a radiologic or nuclear incident. By employing forensic techniques, it will be possible to answer questions such as: what has happened, and who is responsible? With this programme, the Netherlands will be able to contribute considerably to the efforts to counter nuclear terrorism.

Broad Dutch Representation

In addition to the NFI, other Dutch organisations present at the conference included the Delft University of Technology, Urenco, and the Netherlands Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security. Together they presented themselves under the Dutch flag with the credo 'Small Country, Great Skills: The Netherlands contributes to nuclear security through ingenuity, cooperation, education and collaboration'.

International Approach

The Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency supports the mission of the Nuclear Security Summit, initiated by President Barack Obama. The object: unite world leaders in order to prevent nuclear terrorism together. In 2014, the Netherlands will be hosting the third summit, which will take place in The Hague – the international city of peace, justice and security – on 24 and 25 March.
