NFI experts teach in ‘Master in NuclearSecurity’
Last week, students of the international Master in NuclearSecurity degree programme were taught by radiation experts and forensic experts of the NFI.
Forensic expertise was the central focus during the three-day learning module. Both at a scene where a crime has been committed involving nuclear and/or radioactive material as well as during an investigation into the manner in which such materials were spread illegally.
The adequate use of traditional forensic methods and techniques of investigation makes it possible to collect evidence to trace and prosecute suspects. The students therefore learned more about the investigative approach to a nuclear/radiological crime scene. Points for attention when securing traces at such crime scenes were also dealt with and it was explained what traces can be searched for in a targeted manner.
There was also attention for the principles that form the basis for forensic investigation as a science, the determination of evidentiary value and the manner of reporting. The techniques that are at the basis of determining the origins of nuclear material and the international cooperation in this field of expertise were also included in the teaching material.
Master in NuclearSecurity
The lessons form part of the international Master in NuclearSecurity degree programme of the Delft University of Technology, organised by Delft TopTech. This Master provides a broad perspective of all aspects of nuclear security and anticipating the threat against nuclear installations, materials and radioactive sources.
